Extending the Museum

Shohei Shigematsu is a Partner at OMA and Director of the firm’s New York office, where he has led its diverse portfolio across the Americas for over a decade. His work spans cultural, civic, and commercial projects, with a particular focus on reimagining institutions for a rapidly evolving public realm. Shigematsu has designed major exhibitions and performance spaces and is currently leading two significant museum expansion projects: the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo and the New Museum in New York.
In his presentation, he reflects on OMA’s ongoing engagements with the art world and considers how cultural institutions of varying scales and typologies are reshaping themselves in response to shifting demands and audiences.
