Cho Minsuk

Cho Minsuk is an architect and the founding principal of Seoul-based firm Mass Studies. Minsuk graduated from the architectural engineering department of Yonsei University in Seoul and the Graduate School of Architecture at Columbia University. After working at various firms, including OMA Rotterdam, he established Cho Slade Architecture in 1998 in New York City with partner James Slade. Since returning to Seoul in 2003, Minsuk has been committed to contributing to a broader architectural discourse through socio-cultural and urban research with Mass Studies. The firm’s notable built projects include the Pixel House in Gyeonggido, South Korea (2003); the Ann Demeulemeester Shop in Seoul (2007); the Daejeon University Cultural Arts Center (2019); and, most recently, his “Archipelagic Void” design for the Serpentine Pavilion 2024, in London’s Kensington Gardens.
Minsuk co-curated the 2011 Gwangju Design Biennale, and was the commissioner and co-curator of the Korean Pavilion for the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2014, which was awarded the Golden Lion for Best National Participation. Minsuk’s work with Mass Studies had been presented in multiple exhibitions, including the Venice Architecture Biennale (2004, 2010), the Vitra Museum traveling exhibition “Open House” (2006–8) to, and a solo exhibition entitled “Before/After: Mass Studies Does Architecture” at the PLATEAU Samsung Museum of Art in Seoul (2014). He is an active lecturer and speaker at symposiums worldwide.
