Michael Maltzan

Michael Maltzan founded Michael Maltzan Architecture in 1995. Based in Los Angeles, the studio’s portfolio spans a range of locations, programs, and typologies, receiving international acclaim for design and construction innovation. The firm’s most notable projects include MoMA QNS (New York City), Star Apartments (Los Angeles), the Pittman Dowell Residence (Los Angeles), the Sixth Street Viaduct (Los Angeles), MIT Vassar Street Residential Hall (Cambridge, Massachusetts), UCLA Hammer Museum (Los Angeles), and Winnipeg Art Gallery Inuit Art Centre (Winnipeg, Canada).
Maltzan holds an MArch from Harvard University's Graduate School of Design and BFA and BArch degrees from Rhode Island School of Design. He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects and received the 2025 Cooper Hewitt National Design Award in Architecture, the 2025 AIA California Maybeck Award, the 2016 AIA Los Angeles Gold Medal, and the 2012 American Academy of Arts and Letters Architecture Award (inducted as Academy member in 2023). Maltzan was elected to the National Academy of Design in 2020.
