The Virtual Girjegumpi
Joar Nango is a Sámi architect and Indigenous artist whose work explores nomadic ideas of space, territory, and home through a resourceful and experimental use of materials. For The World Around, and in collaboration with ArkDes, Sweden’s national museum of architecture and design, Nango will present a digital manifestation of the Girjegumpi: Sámi Architecture Library, a growing, mobile archive of Indigenous spatial knowledge that he has been developing since 2018. The presentation will highlight how the library functions as both a living artwork and a repository of Sámi architectural traditions, and will be contextualized through ArkDes’ exhibition Kiruna Forever, which examines the dramatic relocation of a northern Swedish mining town and its wider cultural and ecological implications.
