Alejandro Haiek Coll

Alejandro Haiek Coll is an architect, researcher, and associate professor at Umeå University, where he leads MA Studio 12 and directs the Laboratory of Intersectional Ecologies. His practice bridges architecture, geography, and environmental science through design research, speculative cartographies, and multispecies diplomacy. He works in post-extractive landscapes, combining bioremediation, and nature-informed strategies to reprogram damaged geographies through collective infrastructures and algorithmic tools.
Alejandro has exhibited at the Chicago Architecture Biennial (Future Gardens, 2025), Milano Triennale (Territorial Epigenesis, 2025), Favara Biennale (Trades of Cultural Capital, 2022), and WOJR-Civitella Award (Industries of Nature, 2019). His research is supported by the Arctic Research Center and UmArts. He has taught internationally at Harvard, the AA, KTH, IAAC, Tokyo Geidai, and Escola da Cidade. Alejandro holds a PhD Excellent cum laude from the Università di Genova.
“Participating in The World Around connects our practice to a global conversation that embraces design as a form of planetary repair, rooted in artistic and scientific rigor, and animated by unexpected alliances. Living within altered geographies and treated planetary systems, this platform offers a hopeful framework to reweave our commitment to community practice and long term engagement, both by unveiling the often-invisible world of injustices and by enabling speculative visions of near futures to emerge.”
