Andra Matin
Andra Matin is the founding principal of andramatin studio. Throughout his career, Andra has lobbied for the commissioners of architecture to understand the value of their own building traditions before importing new materials and ideas. His approach aims to connect the ambitions of Tropical Modernism to the range of building traditions seen across the Indonesian archipelago. Andra has received numerous awards for his contributions to architecture, including the prestigious Indonesian Institute of Architects Award in 1999, 2002, 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011. His design for the Banyuwangi Airport in East Java, Indonesia (2018), received the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2022.
Alongside his design practice, Andra has long championed architectural culture and education in Indonesia. In 1989, he co-founded Arsitek Muda Indonesia (AMI, which translates to Young Architects of Indonesia), to expand public interest in the field. Andra has lectured at universities and led seminars around the world, and is a visiting teacher at the Bengal Institute.
