Chance-Change

Officially opened to the public in spring 2023, the Pearling Path is a two mile-long corridor through the historic pearl-trade district of the Bahraini city of Muharraq, passing buildings new and restored that were commissioned as part of an urban revitalization program. Since the start of the initiative almost two decades ago, the Bahrain-based Dutch architect Anne Holtrop has been one of its most engaged advocates, having contributed through projects from the scale of street furniture to the renovation of the historic Qaysariyyah Souq. Holtrop’s latest addition to the UNESCO World Heritage Site is the Siyadi Pearl Museum, a cultural space dedicated to its millenia-old tradition of pearl fishing. Part careful restoration, part bold intervention, Holtrop’s project renders visible the site’s latent histories, engaging in a dialogue with the past through an architectural language found in local materials.
