Building Constituencies

Troy Schaum is the founding principal of Schaum Architects, the practice working with Judd Foundation to catalogue, assess, and preserve the legacy of Donald Judd. Most recently, this program has seen the architects’ multi-year restoration of one of Judd’s later adaptive reuse projects: a former grocery store Judd converted into an architecture office for hosting clients.
One of eleven buildings that are part of the Judd Foundation’s long-term restoration plan for his living and working spaces in Marfa, the office is the first project to reintroduce the renowned American artist through his work in architecture.
When Judd moved to Marfa in the 1970s, he set a depopulated army town on a path to becoming a major art destination. As the Judd Foundation’s restored buildings open their doors to the public, how will the desert city be reframed in relation to contemporary architecture? The World Around reports on-site in Marfa.
