Planning to Rebuild in the Wake of War

Alexander Shevchenko is the founder of Zvidsy Agency and the initiator of ReStart Ukraine, a project and NGO he launched in 2022 in direct response to the Russian invasion of his home country. Conceived as an open-source collective of researchers and practitioners, ReStart Ukraine is dedicated to exploring and developing strategies for the large-scale restoration of Ukrainian cities and villages, offering both hope and practical frameworks for rebuilding after devastation.
Shevchenko’s background spans civil engineering, spatial planning, and urbanism, and his career reflects a broad international perspective. He has studied and worked in Ukraine, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Germany, and Malaysia, and has collaborated with leading institutions including UN-Habitat (WUF 9), GIZ, USAIN, and UNDP. With a multisectoral approach and a strong commitment to resilience, Shevchenko is shaping new conversations about the future of Ukraine’s urban and rural landscapes.
