Cultural entrepreneur Ximena Caminos has championed the power of art to motivate cultural change through major arts and design master plans across the Americas. Having served as Artistic Visionary Planner for The Underline—a 10-mile linear park transforming the land below Miami’s Metrorail—Caminos’s latest undertaking is the city’s Reefline: a first-of-its-kind underwater sculpture park spanning seven miles off the coast of Miami Beach. An interdisciplinary, collaborative endeavour, the project combines art, science, and education to reimagine how the public engages with the environment in a rapidly warming world and raise awareness of the importance of coastal ecosystems. The first sculpture, by internationally acclaimed artist Leandro Erlich, was deployed in October last year. As the project’s realization continues in phases, the permanent installations will act as an artificial coral reef, aiming to support the growth of corals and a host of other marine life through large-scale artistic interventions.
