Lichenary is a citizen science platform using lichens as bioindicators to measure air quality and make atmospheric pollution visible. Working with a global volunteer network, the project has documented over 800 lichens across more than 15 countries, translating them into an interactive online map. An identification guide, workshops, webinars and public campaigns allow participants without formal scientific training to contribute observations with just their phones. The siblings are now expanding the project from monitoring pollution to mitigating it, developing moss-based biofiltration panels designed to absorb urban pollutants.

Carla Gheorghe & Rareș Gheorghe co-founded Lichenary, conducted its field surveys and built its website in HTML. They wrote The Official Lichen Identification Guide, trained and coordinated more than 100 volunteers, created the international mapping platform underpinning the project and are now developing moss-based filtration panels.
