Ocean School Desks

School children laugh while sat at Twende Green Ecocycle's recycled plastic desks.

Lawrence Kosgei, a Kenyan designer and social entrepreneur, is the founder of Twende Green Ecocycle, a venture that turns plastic pollution into opportunity. As part of the Young Climate Prize Cycle 02 Cohort, and mentored by Amy Luthman, Kosgei has developed an innovative model that addresses both environmental and social challenges.

From Mombasa’s informal settlements, Twende Green Ecocycle collects marine plastic waste and transforms it into durable, tree-saving school furniture. Its flagship product, the eco-desk, provides a sustainable alternative to wood, reducing deforestation while improving learning environments.

Through this approach, Kosgei and his team not only combat plastic pollution but also expand access to education and create new job opportunities for young people, demonstrating how design can drive systemic change.
