Urchin Corals
During The World Around Summit 2023, Dr Pirjo Haikola described to the audience her “more-than-human approach” to design. This approach manifests in her art work, in which she uses photogrammetry to recreate subaquatic coral landscapes—utilising sea urchin shell-biopolymer material—to bring to the surface the problems in the ocean.
Haikola also spoke about her research that investigates materials and devices intended for reef restoration, in some of the world’s most vulnerable aquatic environments. Through this work, she sees the corals as her “client,” again reiterating her more-than-human ideology.
