Viaje al Microcosmos

Viaje Al Microcosmos lead a group along the dried-up river bed of the Santa Catarina River in Monterrey, Mexico. Buildings rise in front of mountains in the background.

Viaje al Microcosmos, founded by Alma Lucero Arredondo Medellín, Andrea Villarreal Rodríguez, and Susanna Scott Ayala, is a collective that believes cities and nature can coexist in harmony. Blending science and art, their work fosters environmental stewardship and addresses the long-standing disconnect between urban communities and the natural systems that sustain them.In the context of the climate crisis, the team sees urban river restoration as central to building resilience. Their Water Field Journal invites residents of Monterrey, Mexico, to explore and monitor the Santa Catarina River using printable templates. Participants record water characteristics, track quality indicators, and share personal reflections. With more than 250 entries so far, the project has created a growing archive that both supports evidence-based conservation and reframes water as more than a resource—as a vital and interconnected element of life itself. The Viaje al Microcosmos team was part of the Young Climate Prize Cycle 02 Cohort and was mentored by Sean Connelly, a Pacific Islander American artist of Kanaka Hawaiʻi and Ilocano heritage. Connelly’s practice, which bridges land, water, and culture through both scientific and ancestral knowledge, helped the team strengthen their approach to connecting ecological restoration with community engagement.
