While Bangkok’s historic sites draw tourists from across the globe, Thai architect Chatpong ‘Chat’ Chuenrudeemol is more interested in its informal architectural attractions.

Since 2013, the founder of CHAT Architects has been undertaking an extensive research project titled “Bangkok Bastards,” documenting and taxonomizing the ingenious, if ad hoc, improvisations of the Thai capital’s street vernacular. In the practice’s most recent project, the Angsila Oyster Scaffolding Pavilion, Chuenrudeemol adopts a design approach straight from the bastard manual, reappropriating a scaffolding structure traditionally used for oyster farming. Situated off the coast of the small village in Thailand’s Chonburi Province, the design creates a multi-use pavilion where visitors can dine on seafood cultivated in the shallows below, building an eco-tourism infrastructure to revive Angsila’s once thriving local trade.
