Bas Smets

Bas Smets is a landscape architect with a background in civil engineering and architecture. Since founding his Brussels-based firm in 2007, Bas has completed over 50 international projects, including the LUMA Parc des Ateliers in Arles, France (2021), the Himara Waterfront in Albania (2017), and the Sunken Garden in London (2011). In 2022, Bas won the prestigious international competition to redesign the public space surrounding Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. His concept of “Augmented Landscapes” is characteristic of his innovative approach, which uses natural processes to create new microclimates.
In 2023, Bas was appointed professor in practice at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, where he continues to research innovative ways to transform urban environments into ecosystems capable of mitigating the impacts of climate change.
