Bas Smets is a landscape architect with a background in civil engineering and architecture. Since founding his Brussels-based firm in 2007, Smets has completed more than 50 international projects, including the LUMA Parc des Ateliers in Arles, France (2021), the Himara Waterfront in Albania (2017), and the Sunken Garden in London (2011). In 2022, Smets won the prestigious international competition to redesign the public space surrounding Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. His concept of “Augmented Landscapes” is characteristic of his innovative approach, which uses natural processes to create new microclimates. In 2023, Smets was appointed professor in practice at Harvard GSD, where he continues to research innovative ways to transform urban environments into ecosystems capable of mitigating the impacts of climate change.
