Bringing Stone to the 21st Century

All-Purpose Pavilion at the 2023 Venice Biennale. The roof of the pavilion is formed of white tessellating stone pieces and supported by slender cylindrical stone columns.

The Palestine-based studio AAU Anastas is led by brothers Elias and Yousef Anastas and defined by a pluralistic practice that spans architecture, design, research, and cultural production. Their work is united by a commitment to experimentation, process, and community, often blurring the boundaries between disciplines and scales.

In 2012, they founded Local Industries, a collective of artisans and designers dedicated to bold approaches to industrial furniture-making. Four years later they launched SCALES, a research platform that explores new relationships between scales typically considered opposites. Their recent projects include All Purpose, an installation for the 17th Venice Architecture Biennale; the Hebron Courthouse; and Stone Matters, a pioneering investigation into the use of stone in contemporary Palestinian architecture.

Beyond architecture, Elias and Yousef are also co-founders of Radio alHara, a community-based online radio station broadcasting from Bethlehem, Ramallah, and Amman. Launched during quarantine, the station has become a dynamic space for critical conversations, music, and cultural exchange across borders.
